Port Eliot House and Garden
Port Eliot House and Garden
One of the most beautiful places in Cornwall a perfect outing for the family where children love to run free on the lawns. Others prefer the calm and dappled shade of the woodland garden. Wander amidst the rhododendrons and camellias; get lost in the maze. Marvel at the landscaping designed by Sir Humphrey Repton in the Grade I Listed garden, as you walk along the hidden gems of the estuary walk and the viaduct.
Basement Special: 2 - 7 June
The fantastic basement at Port Eliot will be open for visitors to explore the downstairs really Downton! With the Georgian Kitchen and China Closet and its stunning porcelain of which there is a Meissen dessert service, Staffordshire Derby and many other pieces. The basement reveals some of the oldest parts of the house with 9th century walls and 12th century lancet windows from the monastery. There is an intact Still Room and Carpenters Room, a candle-lit circular wine cellar and beer store with barrels to hold 400 gallons. We will have events on in the basement during the week too.
The Coronation Tableau until 8th July, each afternoon except Fridays and 9 -10 June.
Now in situ is the wonderful Dining Room tableau by renowned production designer and art director, Michael Howells with a creative insight into the Coronations of George VI, Victoria and Elizabeth.
The house and gardens are extremely ancient as the site was once a monastry; the passage of time can be felt as you walk around the estate. Amongst the camellias and other flowers are old magnificent trees like a Thuja Lobbii planted by Mrs Ellis in 1890 or Gunnera and red Acer shrubs.
There is also a beautiful Orangery which dates from the Georgian period with chandaliers romantically entwined with flowers.
There are guided walks on Tuesdays from March to the 8th July 2012 from 3.00p.m. If there is a group interested in a guided walk, please contact us and our Head Gardener may be able to accompany you.
