J-Class Regatta
J-Class Regatta
The first J-Class Regatta in the UK, since the rebirth of the class, takes place at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club in Falmouth. For the first time in history, at least six of these magnificent 1930s classic yachts will compete together, offering spectators incredible racing and views from the headlands around Falmouth Bay.
The J-Class Association has announced a series of spectacular regattas in England during 2012 – the Olympic year. These boats are around 40 metres (140 ft) in length, weigh 200 tonnes, and require a crew of up to thirty experienced sailors. One on its own looks magnificent but the prospect of having six in fierce competition is truly an event not to be missed!
The many headlands around the bay guarantee breathtaking views while competitors and spectators alike can look forward to the challenging races on the courses around Falmouth Bay. There will be enthusiasts, journalists, and TV reporters from all around the world in Falmouth to see these yachts.
Just 10 J-Class yachts were constructed, in a seven-year period between 1930 and 1937: six in the USA and four in England. There were other designs produced but not built. Only three originals survived the Second World War - Shamrock V, Endeavour and Velsheda. They rested and rotted in mud berths, until their rebuild and rebirth as 21st Century racing superyachts. There have never been more than four J-yachts racing together, until Falmouth 2012.
The event lasts from Tuesday to Saturday and includes four racing days and one day off on the Wednesday. Racing will start each day at 10.00 am.
